Thanks be to God. 

 

Call to Worship

 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This is how you shall eat the Passover meal.

Dressed for the journey, sandals on our feet, staff in our hand.

Eat it in haste, for this is the Lord's Passover.

We eat with one another, bound together by the blood of the lamb.

Sing to the Lord a new song, and praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

Where two or three are gathered in my name, says Jesus, I am there among them.

We gather at this table, strangers no more, bound by grace and called by name.

Let us worship God.

Amen. Let us worship.

Prayer of Confession (unison)    

Gracious God, we confess that we have eaten the bread of bitterness and passed the cup of judgment to our neighbor. We have kept records of wrongs when you called us to seek reconciliation. We have stayed silent when we should have spoken, and spoken harshly when we should have listened. We have treated this church like a building instead of a people bound together by your blood. Forgive us, Lord. Loose us from the chains of resentment. Bind us to the way of Jesus, who went to the cross alone so that we might be gathered here together. We ask in his name. Amen.

THE INVITATION TO THE LORD'S TABLE                                            

Friends in Christ, this is the joyful feast of the people of God. On the night of their deliverance, the Israelites ate the Passover meal in haste, bound together by the blood of the lamb. Tonight we gather not in haste but in hope, bound together by the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Here the stranger finds a home. Here the wounded find healing. Here the broken find peace.

 

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

 

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Holy God, creator of the universe and maker of all people.

 

You brought our mothers and fathers through the waters of the sea and fed them with manna in the wilderness. You commanded them to remember your deliverance by sharing the Passover meal, so that no generation would forget your mighty hand and outstretched arm.

 

When we turned away and broke covenant, you did not abandon us. In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, your beloved Son, to be the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. He ate with sinners. He blessed children. He washed the feet of his friends. And on the night before he died, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

 

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

"This is my body, broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

In the same way he took the cup, saying:

"This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."

 

Therefore, as we gather at this table where Christ is present among us—where two or three are gathered, or two or three hundred—we proclaim the mystery of faith:

People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

 

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Holy Spirit upon us, O God, and upon these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

Bind us together, Lord. Loose us from every chain that keeps us from loving you and one another. Make this congregation a household of faith, and let the stranger among us know that they too have a place at the feast.

 

Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, Almighty God, now and forever.

 

We pray all this in the name of Christ, who taught us to pray…

Because there is one loaf, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The bread which we break is the communion of the body of Christ. The cup over which we give thanks is the communion of the blood of Christ.

Eternal God, we give you thanks that we have eaten and drunk at your table. We have tasted the bread of heaven and the cup of salvation. Now send us out with the taste of grace on our lips, to be bread for the hungry, to be wine for the weary, to be the body of Christ in a world that is desperate for good news. Amen.
