Greetings

Open Scripture

Deuteronomy 34:1-12

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Call to Worship (Responsive - based on Psalm 90)

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

A thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.

You sweep us away like a dream, like grass renewed in the morning and withered by evening.

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a wise heart.

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us.

O prosper the work of our hands - O prosper the work of our hands! Let us worship God.

Hymn of Welcome

Eternal Light, Shine in My Heart

Opening Prayer (unison)

Eternal God, our dwelling place in all generations: we are mortal, and you are not; our days are few, and your mercy is not. As we gather around your word, teach us to count our days that we may gain wise hearts. Take the words we are about to hear out of the realm of the familiar and plant them in us as our very life. Speak, Lord, for your servants are listening. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Word made flesh. Amen.

Psalm 90

Lord, You Have Been Our Dwelling Place

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (unison)

God of Moses and of Jesus Christ, we confess that we have handled your word carelessly. We have loved your law without obeying its two great hinges, love of you and love of neighbor. We have wasted our numbered days on trifles - on grudges and anxieties and the accumulation of things that fade like morning grass. We have withheld from others not only our gifts but our own selves. Forgive us. Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, prosper the work of our hands, and teach us to live as people with wise hearts. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Gloria Patri

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Prayer for Illumination (unison)

Living God, your Word is ancient and yet new every morning. As we hear of Moses on the mountain, of Paul among his children in the faith, and of Jesus answering the lawyers, do not let us be hearers only. Give us ears to hear, hearts to take to heart, and hands ready for the work you prosper. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith

Matthew 22

What is the greatest commandment?

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Prayer of Dedication (unison)

God of the numbered days, receive these gifts and the hands that bring them. Prosper the work of our hands - not for our fame, but for your kingdom; not for what withers, but for what lasts.
