Open Scripture

Exodus 33:12–23

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Call to Worship (Responsive)

One: The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

All: The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.

One: We come with the questions we carry and the names we've been given.

All: We come because God has said, "I know you by name.”

One: Moses prayed, "Please show me your glory," and God said, "My presence will go with you.”

All: So we gather, asking for presence, not proof. One: Let them praise your great and awesome name.

All: Holy is he! Let us worship God.

Hymn of Welcome

O God of Earth and Altar

Psalm 99  (Responsive)

One: The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble!

All: He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

One: The Lord is great in Zion;

All: he is exalted over all the peoples.

One: Let them praise your great and awesome name.

All: Holy is he!

One: Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity;

All: you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

One: Extol the Lord our God; worship at his footstool.

All: Holy is he!

One: Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called on his name.

All: They cried to the Lord, and he answered them.

One: He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud; they kept his decrees and the statutes that he gave them.

All: O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.

One: Extol the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain,

All: for the Lord our God is holy.

Opening Prayer

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (unison)

Gracious God, you ask us what belongs to you, and we realize how much we have handed over to lesser things. We render to deadlines what is due to you. We render to worry what is due to trust. We render to the market what is due to mercy. We ask hard questions to trap one another rather than to love one another. We bear your image, yet we let the world re-stamp us with smaller names. Forgive our divided loyalties; make our lives single-hearted; and renew in us your presence, without which we cannot move. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Gloria Patri

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Prayer for Illumination

Living God, you spoke in the pillar of cloud and you speak still. By your Spirit, open our ears to your Word: show us whose image we bear, whose name we carry, and whose we are. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication (unison)

Generous God, these gifts are coins in your hand and images of your grace. Take them - stamped with our labor, marked with our love - and turn them into bread for the hungry, shelter for the stranger, and good news for Chester and beyond. All of it is yours, because all of us are yours. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.
