Associated Artwork: The Sower by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

We live in a world where it frequently feels like folks are just trying to hold it together. Whether it's the economic stress facing everyday families, or the quiet, unseen battles people fight in their own living rooms, it is easy to relate to the Apostle Paul's worry in our reading from 1 Thessalonians today.

Paul writes to a community that is right in the thick of it. He sends Timothy to "strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials."

Paul knew what just about anyone knows, or should know: sometimes, the sheer weight of life makes us feel like we're losing our footing. When you spend time with people going through intense stuff, you realize that healing isn't a quick fix. It's grueling work. It involves a lot of missteps, and it involves a lot of tears. And the same is true for the everyday struggles of congregation, relationships, raising kids, .

But then we read our Psalm for today, Psalm 126, which offers an honest, beautiful promise: "May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy."

Notice what the psalmist doesn't say. He doesn't say, "Those who avoid tears." He doesn't say, "Those who have their lives perfectly put together." The sower in this metaphor is weeping while they work. But they keep sowing. They keep planting the seeds anyway.

That is what we are called to do as a family, whether that be in our church family, our own families, or any group of people we have a relationship with. When we show up for worship, when we read the confession and hear the assurance of pardon together, when we drop off a meal or simply sit on the porch to check in on a neighbor, we are planting seeds. We do this even on the days our own hearts are heavy.

Vincent van Gogh’s vibrant painting, The Sower, captures this sacred, gritty work perfectly. The figure is silhouetted, walking across the rough earth, scattering seed by hand. The labor is earthy, dirty, and exhausting. But behind him, a massive, golden sun dominates the sky. It bathes everything in a profound, divine light. The sower doesn’t have to force the seed to grow. He just has to be faithful to scatter it. The warmth of the sun will do the rest.

As you start your week this Monday, maybe you are carrying something heavy. Maybe you are worried about a family member, navigating an illness, or just worn down by the state of things. Bring those tears to the field. Keep doing the next right thing. The God who promises to restore our fortunes is tending to those seeds you are planting, and a season of laughter and harvest is on the way.

A Prayer for Today

God of the harvest, some days we feel like we are walking through fields of dry dirt, unsure if our efforts mean anything. Give us the courage to keep sowing, even when we must sow in tears. Send down the warmth of Your Spirit to grow what we cannot grow ourselves, and hold us together until we can reap with shouts of joy. In the name of Christ, our sure foundation, Amen.
