Scripture: Luke 6:12, 17-19 (NIV)
"One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God... He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people... who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases... and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all."

Reflection

Have you ever noticed the rhythm of Jesus’ life? It operates in a continuous, holy breath: inhaling in the quiet presence of God, and exhaling in the messy presence of people.

In today's reading, Jesus does something essential before he ever preaches a word or heals a single person: he retreats to a mountain to pray. In our endlessly noisy, notification-driven world, the mountaintop might feel like an impossible luxury. Between work deadlines, keeping up with the news or social media, caring for aging parents or children, or just managing the daily stresses of modern life, who has time to retreat?

But notice what happens next. Jesus doesn't stay up there. He comes down, and Luke makes a point to tell us that he "stood on a level place."

Jesus doesn’t ask the broken, the sick, and the exhausted to climb the mountain to reach him. He comes down to the flat ground where they live. The "level place" is where the grit of real life happens. It’s in hospital waiting rooms, during difficult conversations with struggling people, in the quiet pews of the church, or sitting at the kitchen table staring at a stack of bills.

As a community, we are called to be people of the level place. Like Jesus, we are invited to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our neighbors in their suffering and their joy. But we cannot pour out healing and grace if our own cups are empty. We must also embrace the rhythm of the mountain, taking moments of quiet withdrawal to let God renew our strength.

Today, whether you are managing a classroom, driving a bus, working on a job site, or simply trying to get through the afternoon, remember that God meets you right where you are. On the level place.

Prayer
Gracious God, thank You for coming down to the level places of our lives. When we are depleted, draw us to the quiet mountain to rest in Your presence. When we are renewed, give us the courage to stand with our neighbors in love. Amen.
