Scripture:

- Exodus 32:4 - "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!"

- Psalm 106:23 - "...had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them."

- Matthew 22:10 - "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests."

Reflection:

Notice when the calf gets made: while Moses was delayed on the mountain. The people did not invent a rival God out of rebellion; they invented a god out of anxiety. When the real God seems delayed - and God so often seems delayed - we reach for something smaller we can see, control, and schedule. A calf does not ask anything of you. A calf does not stand in the breach.

But Moses does. Psalm 106 remembers him as the one who put his own body between divine judgment and a people who deserved it - intercession as a physical act, standing in front of the guilty and saying, take me instead. That is the most costly form of solidarity there is, and it runs straight from Moses to the cross.

Then Jesus tells a parable about a banquet. The people on the original guest list are too busy - a farm, a business, the ordinary machinery of getting ahead - and so the king sends his slaves into the streets "to gather all whom they found, both good and bad." Both good and bad. The guest list is not earned; it is gathered. This is the open table we practice every Sunday, made into a story.

And still, do not sanitize the ending. The man without a wedding robe is not cast out for arriving poor - the street guests had no closets. He is called out for treating grace as something that requires nothing of him. The feast welcomes everyone as they are and then refuses to leave them as they are. The guest list is free; the robe is the willingness to be changed by the party.

Prayer:

God of the open table, forgive us for the calves we build when you seem slow to arrive. Keep us from a faith we can manage, control, and schedule, and give us back the God who asks everything and gives more.

Send your church into the streets you love, gathering both good and bad, early and late, until the hall is filled with people we did not choose and cannot do without.

Blessing:

You are on a guest list you did not earn, seated among people you did not choose - go dressed for transformation, not for the costume party of the unchanged.
