It’s the Fourth of July weekend! By tonight, the sky over the river will be lit up, and there’ll be plenty of noise and celebration around town. But I know that when some of you walk through the doors at church tomorrow morning, you aren't bringing fireworks with you. You’re mught just be plain tired.

Maybe you’re worn out from the July heat, the endless news, or just trying to make a paycheck stretch at the grocery store. I hear it in our conversations; folks carrying things that are simply too heavy for one person. Worrying about a family member who's struggling, or dealing with that quiet, nagging voice that tells you you've let someone down and aren't doing enough.

Tomorrow’s gospel reading brings us to Matthew 11. Jesus doesn't hand us a magic wand to make the hard stuff disappear. Instead, he offers a yoke.

A yoke is a piece of work equipment. It’s made for pulling. But the whole point of a yoke is that it’s built for two. Jesus is essentially saying, "Get in here next to me. Let me take the weight." When we try to muscle through the hardest parts of life by ourselves, it crushes us. When we share it with the one who is "gentle and humble in heart," the load actually becomes something we can manage.

We talk a lot about independence this weekend. But maybe the exact freedom we need right now is permission to be dependent on God. To stop trying to carry the whole world on our own shoulders.

If you’re exhausted today, you’re in good company. Come to worship tomorrow just as worn out as you are. The rest is already waiting.

Prayer:
Lord, we are tired. We’re tired of the pressure, the noise, and the heavy things we try to carry all by ourselves. This weekend, as we celebrate freedom, free us from the lie that we have to do it all alone. Help us step into the yoke with you. Amen.
