Matthew 10:40-42
“Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me... And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

Reflection:
Tomorrow morning, we’ll gather around the baptismal font at Trinity Parish. We'll hear the splash of the water, read the promises, and welcome the newly baptized into the family. It’s one of the most beautiful, sacred things we do together.

But in this week's lectionary reading, Jesus reminds us that holy water isn't just found in the sanctuary font. He says, “whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones... none of these will lose their reward.”

It’s easy to get bogged down feeling like we aren't doing enough. We look at the heavy burdens people carry in our communities, addiction, grief, financial stress...and we think we have to fix it all. Sometimes, it can feel like it's just too much.

But Jesus takes that pressure right off our shoulders. He doesn't demand grand, world-saving gestures from us. He points to a simple cup of cold water. With the summer heat settling in around us, that image takes on a pretty literal, refreshing meaning.

Faithfulness is really just ordinary stuff. It's the text message checking in on a friend. It's listening without interrupting. It's the patience you show the cashier at the grocery store. It's the small, quiet work of showing up for the people right in front of you.

As you go about your Saturday, whether you're working, resting, or running errands, don't worry about saving the world today. Christ has already done that. Just look for the person who might need a little refreshment, and trust that God is working through your simple acts of care.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the grace found in ordinary things. Quiet the voice in our heads that tells us we have to be perfect or do more. Give us the eyes to see who around us just needs a little bit of refreshment today, and give us the simple courage to offer it. Amen.
